With this year packed full of exciting new releases from the biggest names in the business, 2012 looks like a year to remember at the big screen. Lets take a look at some of the most anticipated films coming to a cinema near you.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

After countless production delays finally we can get excited for what surely has to be one of the biggest films to hit our screens in 2012. Peter Jackson is again at the helm as we return to Middle Earth following Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) on his adventures with dwarves, dragons and the first encounter with Gollum. Sir Ian McKellen reprises his role as the great wizard Gandalf the Grey, this is almost certainly guaranteed to break the box office bank but will it be as critically acclaimed as the LOTR trilogy?
The Dark Knight Rises

Starring: Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Release Date: 20th July 2012
The final chapter in Christopher Nolan’s Bat trilogy will once again see Christian Bale don the mask of the caped crusader. We are also introduced to the sinister terrorist leader Bane, played by British star Tom Hardy who worked with Nolan on Inception. Set eight years after the events of the previous film, Batman is forced to return as Bane wreaks havoc across Gotham city. Following the strong British contingent, Anne Hathaway will also be on show as Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman. Expect another Christopher Nolan masterpiece and many twists along the way.

Starring: Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce
Release Date: 1st June 2012
Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, at first an Alien prequel and now an original movie this is going to be one the must sees of the year. Oscar winner Charlize Theron and Noomi Rapace (From the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) head a team of explorers to discover the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them to the darkest corners of the universe. Judging by the first trailer, this is definitely Scott at his Sci-Fi best.

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) unites Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk and the rest of the Marvel universe to S.H.I.E.L.D. an international defence force, their mission; to stop an unexpected enemy threatening the world. Packed with familiar faces and a big budget, this is a banker for box office success, but will it actually be any good?

Bond returns this year for what will be Daniel Craig’s third outing as the British super spy. With his loyalty to M questioned and MI6 under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat. With Judie Dench, Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem supporting and Oscar winner director Sam Mendes (American Beauty) behind the camera; let’s hope this is better than the disappointing Quantum of Solace.

Quentin Tarantino is no stranger to controversy and his next film could well provide more. Starring Jamie Foxx as an escaped slave out for revenge and to free his wife from his former master Leonardo DiCaprio. After the success of Inglorious Basterds this could well be another Tarantino cult classic. Scheduled for the popular UK Boxing day release.
The Amazing Spider-Man

In early 2010, Sony cancelled the idea of Spider-Man 4 in favour of a reboot with a new crew and cast. Andrew Garfield got the nod as the teenage Peter Parker, who we will see on a journey to uncover his past after discovering a secret of his fathers. While the original trilogy were hugely profitable, come the third instalment it had grown stale, heres hoping for a darker Batman style reboot.
